Portrait Of The Week Series - No.38: Sam Irvine

Company executives typically require photographs that can be used not only for internal collateral (profiles, annual reports, etc.) but also LinkedIn, Facebook as well as for use in magazine and press articles.

Having a coordinated photoshoot means having a range of images to suit different needs, without the last minute panic to meet a deadline.

Here is sample from a suite of images I did recently for Sam Irvine of Freeview in and around his office in Auckland.

Portrait Of The Week Series - No.37: Mark (MC Slave) Williams

Occasionally, studio shoots for clients run ahead of schedule and you are left with a bit of spare time to do a mate a favour. Slave needed some new head shots, so I gave him a call and he joined me at White Studios after picking the kids up from school.

Using a Profoto head with a beauty dish against a bare white wall, we got to it and quickly got a range of different looks.

Powerful strobes allow you to work fast - just as well since the kids were getting restless.

Portrait Of The Week Series - No.35: Jennie Skulander

This publicity image of Jennnie Skulander, lead vocals - Devilskinis actually a composite with a fake background and shadow. I photographed Jennie and the rest of the band in an outdoor studio with a combination of natural and strobe light and decided to add textures and backgrounds to a few images to give as much versatility to the press kit as possible.

It was subsequently used as the cover of Rip It Up magazine.

Portrait Of The Week Series - No.33: Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim)

A couple of years back, I photographed Norman Cook at the Serato offices. I had about 10 minutes to get a range of portraits, and Norman happily obliged with good grace and a sense of humour.

He performed as Fatboy Slim that same night at the Vector Arena in Auckland.

Scott turns 40 this week.

He looks meaner in the above photo than he does in reality. Scott is actually a big softie and is a devoted father to Oscar (who incidentally, can cope a 'tude when faced with a D4).

Fix My Life

Auckland radio station ZM is running a new campaign to drive listenership with ads all over town on metrolites, billboards and bus-backs.

Here are two fine young people (Cam and Ellie) exhibiting "first world" problems.

Portrait Of The Week Series - No.27: Mike Relm

I shot this portrait of DJ Mike Relm exactly one year ago at the Clift Hotel in San Francisco. Prior to a video interview, I photographed Mike in the hotel suite using a mixture of natural light and flash.

When taking portraits in a hotel room, you have to work with what you've got - fortunately the room at the Clift was large and stylishly appointed - and I couldn't resist using the large glass table and light shade in the living room as compositional elements.

Mike is lit by daylight coming through a large window to his right.

While the room was being set up for the video interview, I moved Mike to the bedroom and shot an alternate portrait against the floor-to-ceiling drapes using a small soft box.

If Mike was your typical T-shirt/hoody-wearing DJ, these shots may not have been so successful, I think.
